Have you been for your first visit to a temple or shrine this year? We call it "Hatsumode" in Japanese and usually make a monetary offering. I went to Katsuoji this year and learned a little more about the meaning behind the amount of money given... ¥5 is read "go-en" which means good luck so this is a popular coin to use.
2 ¥5 coins will get a little extra good luck.
3 ¥5 coins are for enough good luck.
¥21 or ¥31 amounts can't be divided so these are good amounts for continuing a relationship or a happy marriage.
6 ¥5 coins are for stability and harmony.

And there are a lot more too! Even one where you put in 97 ¥5 coins for a total of ¥485 to get luck in all directions. That's a lot of effort to collect all those coins though... Anyways, just make sure you avoid the ¥10 coins. They supposedly make your luck go away. Yikes!

お賽銭は「ご縁がありますように」って意味で5円玉をお供えするけど、
それぞれの金額で意味が変わってくるんやって☆
☆10円（5円2枚）なら重ね重ねご縁がありますように
☆15（5円3枚）なら十分ご縁がありますように
☆21円や31円は割り切れない数字やから、恋愛継続・夫婦円満
☆30円（5円6枚）なら安定と調和のとれたご縁がありますように

とか他にもいろいろあるんやで！
ボクは、、、四方八方からご縁がありますように485円（5円97枚）！！！欲張りすぎかな？？w
あっ！10円玉は「遠縁」。縁から遠ざかってしまうから避けよう～。
