What's up dock? Designed by Jesse Hartley and Philip Hardwick, the Albert Dock, Liverpool opened in 1846 and was the first structure in Britain to be built from cast iron, brick and stone, with no structural wood - making it the first non-combustible warehouse system in the world.
After a decline in the industry, it closed in 1971 and lay derelict for nearly ten years, until redevelopment began in 1981 through the Merseyside Development Corporation.
It was officially re-opened in 1988 by The Prince of Wales, the great-great-great-grandson of Prince Albert, the man who opened the original docks.
Today the Albert Dock is a major tourist attraction in the city, home to @tateliverpool, and the most visited multi-use attraction in the United Kingdom, outside London. It comprises the largest single collection of Grade I listed buildings anywhere in the UK.
