While this program is offered by the Swiss civil society organization Masanga Education and Assistance (meamasanga.org), which offers education to children in the community, there several Africa-led campaigns working to put a halt to the harmful part of the practice. Bondo ceremonies serve as highly-regarded rites of passage for Sierra Leonean girls as they enter adulthood and thus secret all-women communities, but decoupling FGM/C from the girls’ ceremonies has allowed the community to continue to practice some of their traditions without harming their physical and mental health. During the Bondo ritual, girls can spend up to a month in the bush learning skills from how to be a good wife and mother to successful member of society. Over the past year, I was honored with telling the photographic stories of the world's most vulnerable girls for the latest @ナショナルジオグラフィック story 'The Dangerous Lives of Girls,' published online this week and in the special January 2017 print edition of the magazine which focuses on gender issues.
