Elders say Bondo, which traditionally includes the cutting or removing of external genitalia, ties girls to their communities and readies them for marriage. It also aims to limit women’s sexuality and is physically and emotionally harmful. In Sierra Leone most females have undergone genital mutilation. But the issue goes beyond Sierra Leone -- more than 200 million girls and women alive today have been cut in 30 countries throughout Africa, the Middle East and Asia according to the World Health Organization. Though global efforts are underway to eradicate this practice, it remains one of the more difficult traditions to curtail due to its revered status and perceived ties to maturity and cultural identity in many communities. Over the past year, I was honored with telling the photographic stories of the world's most vulnerable girls for my latest @ナショナルジオグラフィック story 'The Dangerous Lives of Girls,' available online now and in the special January 2017 print edition of the magazine focusing on gender issues.
