A harp seal pup seeks shelter from the relentless wind that scours the sea ice covering Canada's Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Pups are born on the ice in late February and nursed with ultra rich milk for 12-15 days before their mom abandons them to mate and migrate.
The layers of fat will sustain them until hunger or weak ice forces the pups into the water to learn how to swim, what and how to eat. They have to learn how to be harp seal on their own. Rising temperatures have led to the formation of weak sea ice that seduces mother seals to give birth on but not solid enough to support the pups until they are mature enough to swim and survive.
Harp seals have become the Face of Climate Change for us. We return to the ice each year that ice conditions allow and we look forward to documenting life in the ice in 2017.
