Rates of professional portraits were costly in the days before photography, so most Americans relied on the services of portraitists with little or no formal artistic training. The current installation "About Face & Place: American Drawings from the 1800s,” features the work of these artists, who would travel from town to town offering to draw portraits in exchange for room and board. Be sure to visit "About Face & Place" before it closes on Dec. 14.

“Portrait of a Doctor,” c. 1820, possibly by “Mr. Willson” (On loan from Dr. Robert and Katherine Booth)
