Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Brown hare bounding past a sheep – I’ve always loved the graphic, stark quality of the winter landscape and for all of its logistical challenges it’s the time of year that I relish the most. Even if we don’t get much snow down south the month long trip to Scotland that I’ve got scheduled for January-February should mean that I get to indulge my passion some more. When we had the particularly harsh winter of 2011-2012 a new brown site that I’d found close to home remained snow covered for 6 weeks and, most importantly, the snow cover was significant enough to render the landscape as a pure carpet of white. When the snow starts to melt however the landscape loses so much of its quality and it becomes much harder to produce the quality of images that I seek. Here I was simply panning with a hare as it came bounding past and the obliging sheep gave a moment both of interest but also scale. The weather during this time was almost exclusively overcast with milky white skies which would often blend almost seamlessly with the snowy landscape. This consistent light, matched with the consistency of the light falling on the hares, as they were always out in wide open spaces, meant that I was shooting exclusively on manual exposure and in order to maintain a decent depth of field (F8 and upwards) and an appropriate shutter seed for occasional yet unpredictable fast moving actions (1/500sec and upwards) Meant that I was consistently shooting at 1600 ISO. This might seem quite high for such light conditions but I always try to remain as flexible and responsive as possible and this combination was what worked best for me.
