by @drewtrush // Alces alces shirasi—the shiras moose, smallest subspecies of the moose family. Smaller antlers and body size make this species of moose unique. Biologist E.W., Nelson named the subspecies for his friend, politician and photographer George Shiras III in 1914, but did you know that Mr. Shiras also happened to be a National Geographic photographer?! Considered by many to be the father of wildlife photography, Shiras was a true pioneer in the field using lights and camera traps to make his images. His large format, glass plate negatives can still be found in the National Geographic archives to this day. •
