@marcusbleasdale The first LRA commander faces trial at the ICC on December 6 2016 for war crimes and crimes against humanity, including using child soldiers, from 2002-2005 in northern Uganda. At that time, the population lived in such fear that tens of thousands of children would flee their homes every night to avoid being abducted and forced to become soldiers. Here an image I took in 2003 shows children arriving in Gulu: Nearly 25,000 children gather on the street outside of Gulu each night, hoping for safety in numbers. While the trial comes a decade after the violence, it is important to the survivors: “It means that someone was watching, and that our suffering did not go unnoticed” says a villager from Lukodi, one of four sites allegedly targeted by the accused, Dominic Ongwen. Separate from the trial, the ICC's investigation also triggered the Trust Fund for Victims' activity in the region. Since 2008, the TFV has assisted over 200,000 victims in northern Uganda, with reconstructive plastic surgery, prosthetic limbs, psychosocial rehabilitation, peace building efforts, improved agriculture, vocational training, village savings and loans, and commemorations for those who were killed. One trial will not heal all of the suffering, but it will acknowledge what happened, and could help move communities toward reconciliation, justice and peace. #pulitzercenter #internationalcriminalcourt #lordsresistancearmy
