Green Sea Turtles mate off of Buck Island in St. Croix. These waters were protected by President Kennedy in 1961 as a US National Marine Monument and because of this effort by the national government and the National Park Service at Buck Island, animals like sea turtles - along with many other creatures - have rebounded in these important ecosystems
President Obama, too, has worked to expand environmental protections, as he announced the creation of the largest US Marine Monument, protecting New England Deep Sea Canyons and Seamounts, as well as the expansion of the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument in Hawaii.
Conservation efforts like those in St. Croix, New England, and Hawaii are crucial to saving Earth’s oceans.
Coverage from an upcoming story in National Geographic Magazine (@ナショナルジオグラフィック) about protecting special underwater ecosystems in US waters.
