Takeover by @alexberggruen -- the lyrics up top (from the song “Stardust”, popularized by #NatKingCole) combine with the figure's alluring look to deliver a melodious and dramatized large-scale work on paper, from early in #Lichtenstein's career -- “Reverie (Color Separation Drawing)” (tempera, felt-tip pen, printed paper and paper collage on paper; 1965) by #RoyLichtenstein, in our Post-War & Contemporary Evening Sale on Tuesday -- I love how the artist's white tempera marks highlight the figure’s long-lashed eyes, the brilliant strands of her hair, and even certain curves and geometries of the word bubble’s lettering; how the felt-tip pen lines that frame our star’s face show layers and layers of application that build toward the perfect ultimate density; and perhaps most of all, how the figure’s lips are rendered on a separate collage element entirely, begging the question of how subtly different her whole attitude may have appeared with the preliminary set of lips that the artist first outfitted for his protagonist on the work's primary sheet below this over-pasted element // #Christies #ModernArt #ContemporaryArt #PopArt
