A Polar Bear wanders across pack ice and along the floe edge in the Arctic near Navy Board Inlet, Canada. Given that these beautiful creatures need stable sea ice as a means to reach their prey, declining levels of ice are having an adverse impact on Polar Bear populations. In October 2016, the extent of Arctic Sea Ice reached its lowest October levels ever, and such a trend appears as if it will continue into the month of November.
As Polar Bears live in some of the most remote areas of earth, it is difficult to directly measure their numbers. Even still, the species is listed as vulnerable, with the greatest threat to their survival existing in anthropogenically-caused climate change.
Coverage from an upcoming story in @ナショナルジオグラフィック Magazine, and from a film about climate change and its effects on culture and wildlife in the Arctic. To see more wildlife photography, and to learn more about efforts to mitigate climate change, follow me, @BrianSkerry, on Instagram.
