I wake up today and don't want to get out of bed. Not in the mood for optimism or inspiring quotes. Don't want to know what I am waking up to -scared of that. Feeling bereft and stricken and weirdly out of time, like I am a Victorian woman or something, being made to attend a state funeral in a whale bone corset and an enormous plumed hat made out of the feathers of extinct birds. The single saddest part of this horrible nightmare event in American history to me is the fact that 53% of the population of eligible voters didn't vote at all. This wall of silence is the truest tragedy to me on a long list of seriously unjust and despicable tragedies. So many. BUT THE SILENCE The willful numb-seeming comatose muteness is the worst. It feels like this is where we all need to begin. From the grass roots of this refusal to make a sound and exercise the one single privilege however weak one might think it is to speak the hell up. Thousands of people around the world would give their lives for this privilege and they do so every single day Even with all that silence The popular vote was with the WOMAN and MOTHER who believes in civic responsibility and collective strength. Dear Person Who Didn't Vote: who are you and why did you stand by silently? I am sure your reasons are complicated. It's true that there are so many things wrong, but I want to understand. what would it take to get you to bother? In Haiti the people have been hoping for a shot at elections for almost two years. Somalia hasn't had an election in 48 years. Please explain to me why you had the option and didn't use it ?
