The stark lighting and naturalistic portrayal of the human body in the painting 'Saint Sebastian tended by Irene and her Servant' by Nicolas Régnier are clearly derived from Caravaggio, but Régnier here combines them with a marked sense of theatricality. In contrast to the two women who are somewhat idealised, Sebastian has clearly been painted from a live model. This practice was popularised by Caravaggio and embraced by Régnier.

We are thrilled to have this incredible painting on loan from @ferensartgallery until the exhibition closes on 15 January 2017.
