Photo by @renaeffendiphoto North Dakota has been on my mind recently, especially Spirit Lake - a Sioux Native American reservation home to some 6,200 inhabitants. Life on the reservation is riddled with social problems, among which are poverty,unemployment, substance abuse, high suicide rates and poor nutrition. But the most chilling statistic on Spirit Lake is the high incidents of child abuse that have reached epidemic proportions. According to the tribe members, a vast majority of the child abuse crimes on the reservation, to this day, continue to be neglected by the law enforcement and remain unpunished. As the community grapples with crimes of abuse the family union remains strong, the tribe members are doing their best to take care of their children and those of their relatives. #northdakota #usa #nativeamerican #children @natgeocreative @thephotosociety
