Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mountain hares can be one of the most confiding creatures with which to work and whilst they can be easy to approach there are other ways to work with them. A couple of years ago I was keen to work with them in a vast expanse of white, keen to emphasise the challenges that these hardy herbivores have to endure everyday just to survive. This is especially true when you compare them with their lowland cousins, the brown hare, that tend to inhabit the lush, verdant lowlands. In order to achieve this I headed high into the hills, to where all trace of vegetation disappeared and it was here that I would sit, waiting and hoping for a hare to appear. On some days I made no images but I always learnt something new, a new observation or pattern of behaviour and no day in the mountains is ever wasted. On this particular day however I got lucky as a couple of hares appeared on the ice field not far from where I lay concealed. As I was capturing a few images of the two, at left, another hare appeared in the distance behind them and came barrelling straight toward me. As a consequence of the time invested in making this image, and the difficulty of enduring the cold for large periods of time this image remains one of the most challenging that I’ve ever produced.
