Cell phones have become an extremely valuable tool for the Masai, allowing them to communicate with each other and reveal positions of lions who may be hunting their cattle. The relationship between Masai and lions in the Mara is tense. Lions frequently hunt Masai cows, some even now seem to specialise in cattle. Over grazing in the Mara has resulted in reduced numbers of prey animals available to the lions - cattle are their only alternative. Cell phones however seem to be a positive tool to combat such conflict.
