@nicoletung photographed Eman Khalaf, a refugee from Syria, with 2 of her children in Bar Elias, Lebanon. Eman is desperate to move to Canada — to follow in the footsteps of her brother-in-law, Mouhamad al-Hajj. The 2 couples lived side by side south of Aleppo, and later in adjacent tents in a refugee camp in Lebanon. But then, a group of Canadian strangers essentially adopted Mouhamad’s family, a practice that has been repeated thousands of times across #Canada. When the Hajjes started building new, and much different, lives in Toronto, it wasn't long before pleading messages from the Middle East became constant. "We just want to thank you in advance for anything you can do." Eman said in one message to her sister-in-law. "We would be forever grateful to you if this happened." The grandmotherly group of sponsors who brought the Hajjes to Canada had already responded to the #refugeecrisis more generously than many people across the world, was it enough? Where does it stop?
