Most New York City kids are back in school this week. But instead of packing her book bag, the 11-year-old fashion designer Egypt Ufele is heading to California to showcase a new collection. Egypt began making outfits for dolls with her grandmother’s sewing machine when she was 5. By 8, she was designing her first wearables. But, her big break came last year when she made it into Small Boutique, an event for independent designers during #NYFW. Egypt was chosen for her focus on curvy models, women, men and children. “I’m a plus-size little girl myself,” she said, noting that an episode of bullying encouraged her to make clothes for girls like her. Because of her schedule, Egypt is home-schooled. But she has some advice for those starting classes this week. “If you like it,” she said, “you shouldn’t care what other people think.” @karstenmoran photographed Egypt at her family’s home in Queens. Visit the link in our profile to find out Egypt's muse and her fashion forecast for the fall.
