Photo by @Gerd Ludwig. Referred to as Mother of the Black Earth, this large tree on the land of the Munduruku is several hundred years old. Historically, the Munduruku are a people with a warrior tradition. They culturally dominated the region of the Valley of the Tapajós River, which during the 19th century was known as Mundurukânia. They still live mostly by hunting, fishing, gathering and agriculture, but their lifestyle has been threatened by the construction of a great waterway on the central Brazilian rivers, such as the Rio Canuma. Reuters reports that earlier this month, the Brazilian government announced to suspend its plans for the Sao Luiz de Tapajos hydroelectric dam, which according to Greenpeace would flood nearly 400km of forest, but it is just one of several dams planned that would deeply impact the lives of Munduruku.
