To celebrate #OlympicPeace we’re sharing stories of how sport brings the world together. Today, we are telling the story of a man who escaped from conflict and encountered freedom through sport

Lopez Lomong is one of the few Americans who has had the privilege of carrying the flag of his country into the Opening Ceremony of the Olympic Games. His story is one of inspiration, fight and respect. Kidnapped in South Sudan at the age of six and condemned to become a child soldier, Lomong escaped to Kenya. After spending years as a refugee there, he took the opportunity to go to the United States, where a foster family provided him with the support and safety he needed to train day and night. He became a US citizen in 2007 and, only a year later, qualified for the Olympic Games Beijing 2008. In his new home, he forged a strong bond of friendship and respect with his teammates, who gave him the honour of leading the American delegation into the stadium on the world’s greatest sporting stage.

After having escaped and run for his life, sport gave Lomong what he describes as “the most exciting day ever in (his) life.”
