When Anna Sofia Botha, right, tried to get close enough to congratulate the South African runner Wayde van Niekerk (@waydedreamer) after he won the gold medal in the 400 meters, she said she kept getting turned away. Her credentials were impeccable. But with her white helmet hair and kindly air, event officials apparently did not believe the 74-year-old coached the man who had just broken Michael Johnson’s 1999 world record. Anna, who has been coaching @waydedreamer for 4 years now, will turn 75 later this year, but has no plans to slow down. “I still love coaching and I still love my athletes,” Anna told @nytimessports, “so I can’t see a reason why I would go and sit down and play with my fingers. That’s not in my nature.” @jfurt, an @nytimessports editor who is #ReportingFromRio this week, photographed Anna being interviewed by @supersporttv’s @crystalnarnold in the Olympic Village at the @リオ五輪2016 @オリンピック.
