Introducing our #GirlGaze photography contest winner @lafillebella. She shares what it was like to shoot for the September issue. “I’m so excited to be photographing musicians,” enthuses Bella Newman, the 17-year-old who shot Beau, this month’s Playlist feature. “They have this colorful soul piping through them. They just automatically have this rhythm, this beat, this flow." Watching the Pennsylvania native at work—giving firm direction to the girls of the folk-rock band and switching between her digital and film cameras like a seasoned pro—you wouldn’t guess it, but Bella has never been part of a professional shoot before. “I started taking pictures when I was 11. I would photograph my friends wearing Limited Too in bathtubs on my Nintendo DSi,” she says with a laugh. Bella has since graduated to capturing striking images of everyday people, from friends and family to people she passes on the street. “Ultimately, I want to go into filmmaking,” she says. “I feel like subconsciously, I’ve always wanted my pictures to tell a story, so the mediums go hand-in-hand.” ?: @vincentfarone
