Olympic gymnastics didn't open to women until 1952, and then it was mostly dominated by Eastern European athletes. That is, until the 1984 Los Angeles Games when American gymnast Mary Lou Retton took home the Olympic all-around title, making her the first gymnast from outside Eastern Europe to do so. She won a total of five medals that year, the most of any athlete at the Games. Her accomplishments are thought to have inspired a whole generation of girls to learn gymnastics. #Rio2016 #OlympicThrowback
