It’s a fine feathered #FossilFriday!
Feathers are light and airy—but they are extremely sturdy and can fossilize well under the right conditions, so feather fossils are not uncommon. This specimen could be mistaken for a modern bird feather but dates to the Eocene, around 50 million years ago. It was collected in the Green River Formation in Twin Creek, Wyoming. Scientists haven’t yet identified what type of bird it was.
