Fresh vegetables arrive twice a week by truck. If the lights go out, electricians are a 12-hour drive away. Those who live here are choked by swirling sandstorms and baked by summer temperatures that can reach 122 degrees Fahrenheit. And yet every year, thousands of visitors descend on Birdsville, on the far reaches of the Australian outback, for the Big Red Bash. The organizers of the event — which was named for the 90-foot-tall sand dune just outside of town — say it’s the most remote music festival on earth. For many, the attraction of the #BigRedBash is that remoteness. Home to just 100 people, Birdsville has one primary school with 6 students, one tiny hospital and one police station, which are staffed by one nurse and one policeman. But there are tourist attractions, too: the Birdsville Bakery, celebrated for its curried camel pies, and the Big Red sand dune, pictured here. @adamfergusonphoto traveled to Birdsville to photograph the #BigRedBash while on #nytassignment.
