We’re chasing light and shadows around the @hirshhorn for our Robert Irwin exhibition!
Throughout the history of art, light has been linked to fundamental questions of vision and perception. Irwin has asked many questions about how we see light and shadow, and in “Untitled” (1969), he created an artwork that doesn’t begin and end at the edge of a traditional frame or pedestal. By casting shadows onto convex discs, he erased the idea of precise boundaries of the work.
As Hirshhorn curator Evelyn Hankins writes, “Without the shadows, the work is incomplete.” #RobertIrwinHH is on view through September 5th.
