As a little girl, Mae C. Jemison had two loves: dance and science. Her loves followed Mae through high school and into her time at Stanford University, where she participated in theater and dance while earning a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering.  She continued to chase her love of science as she obtained her M.D. at Cornell University Medical College. Somehow, in all of that, she found time to expand her horizons by studying in Cuba and Kenya, and by working at a Cambodian refuge camp in Thailand.  She went on to serve in the Peace Corps as a medical officer for Sierra Leone and Liberia and, upon her return to the United States, she decided to make a career change when she was chosen to enter NASA’s Astronauts Training Program.  Not only was she the first African-American woman to enter the training program, she was also the first African-American female astronaut.  In 1992, she served aboard the Endeavor and during that mission became the first African-American woman in space. And guess what she took to space with her...her love of dance in the form of a poster of the Alvin Ailey Dance Company.  Her story is especially meaningful to me, since my grandfather worked at NASA for many years and instilled a love of space in me from an early age. It is only fitting that on #spaceexplorationday my #WCW is Dr. Mae C. Jemison.
