The Kulung Rai live in some of the most remote corners of Eastern Nepal. Their animistic culture and religion harbors a deep symbiosis with the nature that is very much moderated and accessed through the spirit world. This includes ritual practices around the harvest of wild honey - by gently removing the beehives and preserving the bee colonies, they make sure there is room for the bees to return the following season. As Maule Dhan descends onto the cliffs and approaches the hives he invokes a litany of spirit names. He calls in and honors his ancestors while also appeasing the spirits of the cliffs and the animals in the forest. The spirits, in turn, surround him and provide protection and harmony - safe passage and prosperity for the honey hunters and the bees alike. ~

Last week, I spoke with Maule Dhan and the team, and they reported that the bees have returned to the cliffs we visited during the expedition in even greater numbers than before. Rangkemi and the other spirits were pleased, they said. The omens for the future are good.
