An Oceanic Whitetip Shark swims past cameraman @JoeRomeiro333 in the waters of The Bahamas. This pelagic species of shark lives in the open ocean and was once considered to be the most abundant large animal on Earth (large being defined as being more than 100 pounds in weight). Today the species’ numbers are 99% in decline and they are on the verge of extinction due to over fishing. Oceanic whitetip shark fins are prized for shark fin soup and at a Hong Kong seafood market, their fins can fetch $265 per pound.
Diving with these animals is exhilarating and I found myself nearly hypnotized watching their golden-colored backs with dappled sunlight in the blue Bahamian waters. My hope is that though photography we can help people to see these animals in a new way and create respect and appreciation for them.
