Fact; The Witch of Capri was originally written as a female character. In fact, Losey had first asked Katharine Hepburn if she wanted the role; far from being interested, she was insulted and she turned it down. He'd also wanted Ingrid Bergman to be paired with English actor James Fox, but Bergman turned down the role as too vulgar. "I can't say the word 'bugger' without blushing," she'd told the director.
While Losey was delighted to work with his friends the Burtons, Chris as envisioned was a young poet, and Richard Burton was considered by most to be terribly miscast as well as too old for the part.
