This morning is the start of @letourdefrance, arguably the greatest cycling spectacle on earth. Here is an excerpt from #PaulSmith’s Cycling scrapbook explaining Paul’s first experience of the event: “I grew up listening to older cyclists talking about the Tour de France, and learning about it’s legends. Names like the Galibier and the Tourmalet became very familiar, even though I knew them only from black-and-white photographs.
The first time I actually saw the Tour was when I went to Paris one Sunday in the late 1970s, to watch the final stage. I was with Pauline, who was then my girlfriend and business partner and is now my wife, and we found a spot on the Place de la Concorde, so that we could enjoy the spectacular sight of the riders turning into the Champs-Élysées. Even though we’re both quite tall, the crowd was so big that we needed a couple of those cardboard periscope things to see over their heads.” #PaulSmith’s Cycling scrapbook is available now at paulsmith.co.uk from all good bookshops.
