Photo by @daviddoubilet A swell shark embryo absorbs a round yolk for nutrients as it grows inside a flattened egg case attached to kelp off the California coast. An empty egg case is sometimes called a MERMAIDS PURSE. The shark will hatch in 7-12 months depending on water temperature. Swell sharks get their name from their ability to ingest water and double their size to prevent predators from pulling them out of their hiding spots on the reef. These sharks sleep by day and hunt crustaceans and small fish by night. Shark species are threatened worldwide from over harvest for shark fin soup, we are seeing some success with conservation efforts to reduce the consumption and transport of shark fins on a global scale.
