Asdhan Kulunge checks to see if the bright yellow beeswax has hardened yet. His weathered hand gives a sense of scale to demonstrate the size of an average Apis dorsata laboriosa specimen - commonly known as the Himalayan honey bee. These bees are the largest in the world, measuring well over an inch from their head to their impressive stingers. Their nests regularly exceed a meter in width, and can be host to nearly 100,000 bees each. The Kulung have a special and symbiotic relationship with these wild bees - by harvesting the honey, they ensure that there is room for future colonies in the future, and they take great care to avoid harming the bees. ~

During our #thelasthoneyhunter expedition, we asked the honey hunters if they had any ideas as to why bees were dying in record numbers across the world in a poorly-understood phenomenon called ‘Bee Colony Die-Off.’ Jenge, leader of the honey hunters said in an interview - “Your bees are dying because of you. You live in a big country, you have everything, but you use pesticides too. That’s what kills your bees. You are also losing your wild places. Difficult places are good places for bees." ~
