The jellyfish lake is an ocean in itself. It is isolated from the ocean by limestone walls, but the rock is porous and seawater comes in, creating an ocean mesocosm in the middl of an island. There are millions of jellyfish, none of which stings - they don't need to, because they have no predators within the lake. But during warm (El Niño) years, jellyfish numbers drop precipitously.
