When Staff Sgt. Elizabeth Marks won Gold in the 100m freestyle at the Invictus Games in Orlando, she personally asked Prince Harry to ensure her medal was donated to Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire, as a mark of her gratitude for the life-saving medical care she received two years ago. Prince Harry fulfilled this request yesterday.
In 2014, Sgt. Marks suffered from a serious lung condition shortly before she was due to compete in the inaugural Invictus Games in London. She was in a critical condition for almost two weeks. Thanks to the treatment she received, she has been able to continue swimming, despite it rendering her temporarily blind and faint.
Sgt. Marks also sustained bilateral hip injuries while on tour in Iraq, undergoing four surgeries in 18 months. She won gold for all four swimming events she entered at the 2016 Invictus Games #InvictusSpirit
