About the Shot: It was 12 years ago in the mountains of East Afghanistan when I first worked as an embedded photographer with #USMarines to chronicle their fight against insurgents and the life of the local people caught in between. Coincidentally the same battalion, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, provided the infantry element for Marine Expeditionary Unit on the #USSBataan.

For three days I roamed the labyrinth of this amphibious assault ship photographing the everyday life of thousands of sailors and Marines as the USS Bataan made its way from Norfolk Naval Base to the Fleet Week in New York City. On the flight deck I experienced the brute force of the downwash from a landing MH-53 Sea Stallion and in the hull I learned what it takes keep a steam engine running that moves this 40,000 tons ship ahead.
