This week’s @music feature is on Kristin Welchez (@kristinkontrol), better known as Dee Dee, the frontwoman of garage rockers Dum Dum Girls. Though Kristin’s a seasoned performer now, growing up, she never felt comfortable performing the songs she loved to listen to. “I was incredibly introverted and shy,” she says, “so that was a pipe dream for a really long time.” That is until she released her debut solo album, “X-Communicate,” where she tapped into the sounds of her ‘80s new wave and R&B heroes. With the new record, Kristin was also able to indulge in her lighter, funnier side — as opposed to Dee Dee’s intimidating swagger, which was partially her way of combating stage fright. “I have my heavy moments for sure but I have a lot of light moments, too," she says. "I secretly harbor a desire to be a comedian, so this is working out perfectly.”
