Today's #PhotoOfTheDay is a positive of a photographic negative of two children on a pony riding to school. This Silver gelatin dry plate glass negative was probably taken by George Bell who worked for the Sydney based company of Charles Kerry and Co. George Bell was employed by the Sydney firm of Kerry and Co. in 1890, and the work he produced over the following ten years, stands amongst the best of this period. Bell's pictures transcended hackneyed journalistic records of people and places, and his best photos, contain a lyrical quality, at odds with the demands of journalistic realism. The image depicts two children sitting on a pony. The pony is depicted in the centre of the image standing in water at the edge of a river or dam. A young girl is depicted sitting side-saddle on the pony, she is holding the reins a is shielding the sun from her eyes with her right hand. A young boy is depicted sitting astride the pony behind the girl. Both of the children are well dressed and the caption on the negative suggests that they are on their way to school. A small log can be seen in the foreground of the image just in front of the horse. A river or dam and surrounding vegetation are depicted in the background of the image. The caption, studio number and studio mark are inscribed on the reverse of the negative. #POTD #MAAScollection #GeorgeBell #SchoolDays #KerryAndCo #BuyMeAPony #Straya 55/114 Tyrrell Inventory Number, 382 Kerry Studio Number Object statement Photographic negative, two children on a pony riding to school, glass / gelatin emulsion, photographed by George Bell (attributed), published by Kerry and Co, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, 1890-1900
