Rejected by his mother at birth, he was raised by zookeepers. He was the first polar bear cub to survive past infancy at the Berlin Zoo in more than 30 years, and he became a tourist attraction and commercial success worldwide.
Shortly after his longtime zookeeper’s sudden and premature death, Knut unexpectedly died at the age of four on March 19, 2011. Normally, adult polar bears will reach the age of 30. His death was caused by drowning after he collapsed into his enclosure's pool while suffering from encephalitis. Knut's remains were exhibited in Berlin's Natural History Museum and will be the highlight of this exhibition for years to come.
