#OnThisDay in 1956, Manchester City defeated Birmingham City 3-1 in the FA Cup Final. In the 73rd minute, Birmingham forward Peter Murphy collided with Manchester’s German goalkeeper Bert Trautmann, knocking him unconscious. The rules at the time did not allow for substitutes, so Trautmann, dazed and unsteady on his feet, carried on and defended his net for the remaining 17 minutes. Three days later, Trautmann's neck still hurt, so he went to a doctor who confirmed that he had dislocated five vertebrae, the second of which was cracked in two. Trautmann became a folk hero at Manchester City, for whom he played until 1964, making over 500 appearances.
