When I was 11, my Mum put me into beading classes, at the local craft shop ('Craft Discounts'. Opposite Coles, in Short St, Port Macquarie) to keep me out of trouble in the school holidays. She also let me make and sell my Jewellery, on the counter of her clothing store ('Near Perfect' in Shores City Mall in Port Macquarie) when I was 12 years old. When I was 16, I would make and sell Jewellery (usually made out of cowrie shells and leather) to my class mates, at Port High. When I was 20, I begged friends to have Jewellery parties in their homes, where I would sell my Jewellery in a make shift party plan style operation (often from the boot of my '94 Toyota Corolla). At 22 I started selling my Jewellery from a Bondi Beach market stall. When I was 24, I was in over $80,000 debt, & felt like a failure I employed my first staff member when I was 26, and 'I' became 'we'. When we turned over our first million dollars, I took a trip to LA and by a random turn of events ended up presenting the collection to Patricia Fields styling team, and our earrings appeared in Sex and the City. When I was 30, we were a multi million dollar company, with international offices. I am now 34, & live in New York City. We have teams in Australia, New York, LA, Japan and Paris. I get to work with the most incredible people, doing really cool things, travel the world, and somehow call it a job. 2016 for me so far, has been a year of gratitude; I focus on it, I think about it a lot, and often times my heart and soul are flooded with it. And today, on a very special project I am working on, it hit me really hard..the years, and risks, the unknowns. The sheer leaps of faith, the many types of investments, personal and financial. the passive and the on purpose preparation, that has gone into every point of this journey. It's surreal, and humbling, and quite frankly, really fucking unbelievable to me, most of the time. I don't share this to impress you, I share it to impress upon you, that if an 11 year old in a local craft store in Port Macquarie, can become a 34 year old doing things greater then she could have EVER dreamt of in NYC...Then what have you got to lose? -SWx
