Photo by @tyronefoto (Tyrone Turner) | The region of Mazagão in the Brazilian state of Amapá, is a magical area where the waterways are the highways. As I hung out there, I learned that the Portuguese who colonized this Amazonian area in the late 18th century eventually moved away, leaving their African slaves behind. The area was so remote, that the Afro-descended people were able to live as they pleased, well before Brazil’s abolition of slavery in 1888.
