In 2001 a family brought this item to the Museum for ID Day, an annual event where visitors are encouraged to bring in their natural history collections for identification by scientists. Paleontologist Carl Mehling immediately identified it as a fossil walrus skull and accepted the specimen as a donation from the family into the Museum’s fossil mammal collection. Click the link in our profile to watch an interview with Mehling about the coolest things he’s seen at ID Day, fossil hunting out west, and much more.
Bring your items to this year’s #IDday, May 7, 2016!
