Yellowstone // How to catch a wolf? Project leader of the Yellowstone Wolf Project, Doug Smith, in the midst of darting a gray wolf in Yellowstone National Park in order to fit the wolf with a tracking collar. Once sedated, the biologists begin the speedy work of fitting these animals with a tracking collar along with taking tissue and blood samples.
This wolf was the alpha male of the Mollie's wolf pack. 6 months later, he was killed by a large bull elk during a hunt - likely kicked in the head during the chase. Elk cause 15% of the mortality to gray wolves in Yellowstone - a testament to the strength of elk that can weigh 5-10 times that of a wolf.
