How do you prepare an ostrich and a pig for loan? Our conservators have been hard at work preparing these guys for a grand adventure: the Dentzel Carousel ostrich and pig are going on loan to the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum at Colonial Williamsburg, where they're together with some other carousal animals for an exhibition.
First the conservator examined the sculptures to ensure that their wooden structures were stable and used a syringe to add a consolidant to re-adhere lifting paint. Next, the packing department carefully crated them to keep them safe during transit.
