Photo by Jeff Gusky @hiddenwwi | An emotional reunion took place here on Armistice day, November 11th 2014. The great nephew of an early 20th century Greek immigrant decided, on the spur of the moment, to fly to France from the US to find the final resting place of an uncle lost in combat during WWI. Growing up, he heard so much about this uncle but never got to meet him. I was on assignment for the New York Times covering a story on WWI. By serendipity, I met this gentleman and his wife just before they walked into the Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery (largest American military cemetery in Europe where over 14,200 Americans are buried) looking for his uncle’s grave. The nephew was carrying a picture of his great uncle in uniform. He told me that his uncle had immigrated to America from a beautiful Greek island. And that not long after he became an American he was back on European soil fighting for his newly adopted country. This was a common story at that time. When he finally found his uncle, tears came. He knelt down in front of the marble cross marking his uncle’s final resting place. Then he placed this stone on his uncle’s grave in reverence of his uncle’s life and sacrifice and as a way to make a human connection to this life lost a century ago in the defense of America.
