The 17th century was known as the Golden Age of Painting in the Dutch Republic. While Golden Age works can share characteristics with Baroque painting, it often lacks the idealization and lavish splendor common in the rest of Europe. These portraits lightheartedly capture the character of the sitters while showcasing the technical skills of the artists.
