This beautiful polar bear was on the way to our base camp in the fjord, a little too close for comfort. There were 5 polar bears in the area, so we needed to be alert. The previous year on an attempt to get here (shut down by weather and rough seas) there were 11 polar bears in the area. This photo was taken in the darkest part of the morning as the sun went behind the mountains, so I had to crank up the ISO to 6400 to get this photo. Note, we worked with scientists on helping track and document polar bears with Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation @AdventureScience. If you look closely you can see a tag in his ear and markings on his back. This bear was tagged a few years prior roughly 400 miles away from this location.
