Where did camels originally come from? If you thought of a desert, Radiolab’s Latif Nasser has news for you. They might be known for living in hot, sandy deserts, but camels are actually...arctic. The earliest camel fossils were found in North America where the weather was frigidly cold. Their wide feet helped them stomp through snow and their humps were like warm backpacks of fat. That revelation led Nasser to wonder, “What if the very features that we imagine make the camel so well-suited to places like the Sahara actually evolved to help it get through the winter?” Watch the full talk at go.ted.com/camels and tune in to @pbsofficial tonight at 10pm to watch the full show, TED Talks: Science and Wonder!
